THE TRAITOROUS EIGHT: HOW A 1957 WALKOUT IN MOUNTAIN VIEW BUILT SILICON VALLEY

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Before the AI boom, before the dot-com bust, before San Francisco's office towers started collecting cobwebs, there was a shed-like building on San Antonio Road where eight young engineers quit their jobs on the same day.

That walkout, fall of 1957, is one of the founding stories of what the world now calls Silicon Valley. The men bailed on Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory, a startup founded by Nobel laureate William Shockley, one of the co-inventors of the transistor. Shockley had lured top talent to Mountain View to commercialize his work. The problem: by widely documented historical accounts, the man was abrasive and paranoid to the point of dysfunction. Eight engineers, including Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, decided they weren't going to build anything lasting under him.

Shockley reportedly branded them the "Traitorous Eight," a label that stuck in Silicon Valley lore for the better part of seven decades. What the group did next mattered more than the insult. With financial backing arranged through Fairchild Camera and Instrument Corp., they founded Fairchild Semiconductor in Mountain View, turning a personal grievance into the seed of an entire industry.

Fairchild became the valley's first great training ground. It pioneered silicon-based transistors and integrated circuits at a moment when the electronics industry was still dominated by the East Coast and by vacuum tubes. Within a decade, Fairchild alumni had scattered across the Santa Clara Valley to start their own companies. The pattern was so relentless that industry veterans eventually nicknamed the firm "Fairchildren."

Noyce and Moore left in 1968 to found Intel, which went on to define the microprocessor era and anchor Santa Clara as a chip-design hub for generations. Other Fairchild veterans founded or shaped companies including Advanced Micro Devices and National Semiconductor. This isn't folklore. It's documented in oral histories, corporate records and the standard business-school case studies taught about the region to this day.

What made the moment more than a spinoff story was the region itself. Stanford University, a few miles up the road, had already started encouraging faculty and graduates to commercialize research and lease land in what became Stanford Industrial Park, an arrangement widely credited as an early model for the university-industry pipeline that still defines the area. Cheap land, a research university willing to partner with industry and a growing pool of engineers with defense and aerospace experience created conditions that let the Fairchild diaspora take root rather than scatter.

The valley's name came slightly later. Journalist Don Hoefler is generally credited with popularizing the term "Silicon Valley" in a trade publication in the early 1970s, a nod to the silicon in semiconductor chips and the geography of the Santa Clara Valley where the companies clustered. By then the region had already produced enough chipmakers, and enough spinoffs of spinoffs, that the nickname needed little explanation.

The legacy is visible on a map today. Intel remains headquartered in Santa Clara. AMD, though now based in Texas, traces its founding lineage directly to Fairchild veterans. The office parks along San Antonio Road and Stanford's surrounding corridor still house chip designers, though the buildings have been renovated and re-tenanted many times over.

What has changed is what gets built in those buildings. Semiconductor manufacturing that once defined the valley has largely moved offshore, concentrated today in Taiwan, South Korea and increasingly in new U.S. fabrication plants funded under federal incentive programs aimed at reshoring chip production. California's advantage shifted decades ago from making chips to designing the systems, software and now AI models that run on them. Companies headquartered in that same stretch of the Bay Area, from Google to Nvidia to a wave of newer AI firms, still depend on the design expertise and venture capital infrastructure that trace back to the Fairchild era, even if none of them etch silicon wafers on-site.

Historians of the region point to the Fairchild story as an early example of a dynamic that has repeated itself many times since: talent leaves a company it finds stifling, takes an idea and some colleagues, and starts something new nearby rather than moving away. PayPal alumni later founded or funded companies including Tesla, LinkedIn and Palantir, a pattern so recognized it earned its own nickname, the "PayPal Mafia." The pattern predates PayPal by more than 40 years.

The original Fairchild Semiconductor building on San Antonio Road no longer operates as it did in the 1950s and 1960s, and the company itself went through mergers and eventually became part of ON Semiconductor. But the address still marks a rough starting point for an industry that reshaped the state's economy, its politics and its identity on the world stage.

For an industry now consumed with debates over AI regulation, chip export controls and where the next generation of processors will be manufactured, the story of eight engineers who walked out of a lab in Mountain View remains a reminder of how small a spark can be.
