An election-focused website published by a Calaveras County political activist has posted a letter, dated Oct. 5, 2026, which it says was emailed to the organizers and participants of the 2026 Visit Tuolumne County Tourism Summit, urging that Tuolumne County District 4 Supervisor Steve Griefer be removed from a summit panel.

The letter is self-published. Its author identifies himself on the page as Christopher Buttner, publisher of CalaverasWatchdog.com, and the site files the item under its own categories of “Blog Posts, Letters to Editors, Press Releases.” It is political advocacy material, not the work of a news organization. CALWIRE is not summarizing its contents and does not adopt, endorse or repeat its characterizations of any person.

Griefer is a sitting elected official. Per Tuolumne County’s own website he represents District 4 and took office in January 2025; The Union Democrat reported he was elected in March 2024 to a term running to January 2029. myMotherLode reported that the Board of Supervisors voted 3–2 in 2026 to appoint him board chair.

CALWIRE searched for independent coverage and found none relating to the summit panel or to the letter’s claims. The recent independent reporting on Griefer that CALWIRE did locate concerns unrelated county matters, including his withdrawal from a scheduled debate with community organizer Renée Orth and his statements to county employees following a series of department-head resignations.

CALWIRE has seen no public response from Griefer concerning the letter and has not independently contacted him. He, or any person named here, is invited to respond, and any response will be published.
